Master plan to revitalise the Port Centre
8 Sep 2009This Media Release was issued by Hon Kevin Foley, Deputy Premier, on 7 September 2009.
Member for Port Adelaide Kevin Foley announced today that the South Australian Government’s Land Management Corporation (LMC) and the City of Port Adelaide Enfield will seek tenders for a consultant to prepare a master plan for the McLaren Wharf precinct and Cruickshank’s Corner in historic Port Adelaide.
“These waterfront areas have the potential to attract a significant increase in visitors, residents and day time workers to help reactivate the local area,” Mr Foley said.
“The master plan is expected to be both visionary and deliverable, and we will seek participation and input from key stakeholders and the community,” Mr Foley said.
“The master plan will provide a framework to facilitate investment, underpin the objectives of South Australia’s Strategic Plan, and lead to economic, environmental, heritage and cultural benefits for the local area.”
The McLaren Wharf precinct provides opportunities for a medium/high density mix of uses including residential, commercial, office, visitor accommodation and retail.
Across the river Cruickshank’s Corner precinct provides opportunities for a mixture of non-residential uses creating an iconic public waterfront area celebrating the Port’s maritime and cultural heritage.
The master planning process will assess the feasibility of a maritime heritage precinct on Cruickshank’s Corner that could offer a home for historic South Australian vessels such as the Falie and the Nelcebee. The plans will seek to reflect the Port’s heritage and culture through integration and active re-use of significant character elements.
“The McLaren Wharf and Cruickshank’s Corner study area includes a significant portion of the Port River inner harbour, providing opportunities for improved connections between these two precincts and the Port centre,” Mr Foley said.
Development of these two precincts is separate from, but would complement, the residential and commercial development being undertaken by Newport Quays Consortium.
The McLaren Wharf precinct incorporates McLaren Wharf, Queens Wharf and North Parade Wharf and a portion of the Port Adelaide State Heritage policy area that includes the Customs House and connections to the Port Centre. Cruickshank’s Corner comprises a section of land on the northern bank of the Port River adjacent to the Birkenhead Bridge.
It is anticipated that a master plan will be completed by mid-2010.
